Disclosure: SEO BD Tools, the company behind this blog, sells shared access to premium tools. We mention our own plans where they are relevant and explain the trade-offs honestly. Prices below were checked in October 2026 and can change, so confirm them on each vendor’s own pricing page before you buy.
If you freelance, run a small agency or manage marketing for a small business in the USA, the UK or Canada, the real cost of SEO is rarely one tool. It is a stack: a keyword and audit tool, an AI assistant, a writing checker and a design tool. Each one looks affordable on its own. Together they can cost more than a month of rent.
This guide adds up current list prices, shows two realistic stacks, and then looks at ways to cut the bill without wrecking your workflow.
What the main SEO and AI tools cost in 2026
| Tool | Plan | Monthly price (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Pro | $139.95 | About $117.33 a month on annual billing; 250 keyword metric updates a month |
| Semrush | Guru | $249.95 | About $208.33 a month on annual billing |
| Semrush | Business | $499.95 | About $416.66 a month on annual billing |
| Ahrefs | Starter | $29 | Usage based, with limited monthly credits |
| Ahrefs | Lite | $129 | Entry plan for small sites and personal projects |
| Ahrefs | Standard | $249 | Aimed at freelance SEOs and consultants |
| Ahrefs | Advanced | $449 | More projects and history for in-house teams |
| ChatGPT | Plus | $20 | Monthly billing only on US web checkout |
| Grammarly | Pro | $30 monthly, or $12 a month billed annually | Includes 2,000 AI prompts a month |
Canva Pro is not in the table because its price depends on your country and billing period, so check Canva’s own page. Semrush also charges extra for additional seats, for example $45 per extra user a month on the Pro plan.
What changes in the UK and Canada
The figures above are US dollar list prices. In the UK and Canada you will usually see either your own currency or dollars with tax added at checkout, depending on the vendor. UK VAT on digital services is normally 20 percent, and Canadian buyers can see GST or HST, plus provincial taxes in some provinces.
If you are VAT or GST registered, you may be able to reclaim that tax as a business expense. Ask your accountant rather than guessing. Exchange rates matter too: a weaker pound or Canadian dollar can push a $139.95 plan noticeably higher in local terms, and card fees add a little more.
Two realistic stacks, added up
Solo freelancer
- Semrush Pro: $139.95
- ChatGPT Plus: $20
- Grammarly Pro (monthly): $30
- Total: $189.95 a month, about $2,279 a year. With annual billing on Semrush ($117.33) and Grammarly ($12), it drops to about $149.33 a month.
Small agency
- Semrush Guru: $249.95
- Ahrefs Standard: $249
- ChatGPT Plus: $20
- Grammarly Pro (monthly): $30
- Total: $548.95 a month, about $6,587 a year.
Five ways to lower the bill
- Use the free tools first. Google Search Console and Google Analytics cost nothing, and site owners can get free, limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access through Ahrefs’ free plan.
- Pay annually once you are sure. Semrush’s annual billing saves roughly 17 percent, and Grammarly’s annual price works out to $12 a month instead of $30.
- Run one main research tool, not two. Many freelancers pay for both Semrush and Ahrefs when one would do. Our comparison of Semrush vs Ubersuggest and our list of cheaper Ahrefs alternatives can help you choose.
- Match the plan to real usage. If you only publish a few pages a month, Pro is usually enough. Our Semrush pricing guide explains when Guru starts to pay for itself.
- Consider shared access for some tools. It is cheaper, but it is a different product from an official subscription. Read Shared vs Official SEO Tool Subscriptions before you decide.
Where shared access fits in
Some people choose shared access instead of buying every tool separately. At SEO BD Tools, plans start at $5 a month for Basic, $8 for Standard and $16 for Premium, which covers more than 100 tools including Semrush, ChatGPT Plus and Canva Pro. Customers outside Bangladesh pay by crypto or bank transfer.
This is not an official subscription from each tool’s vendor. Access is shared, some features can be limited, and saved projects may be visible to other members. You can see every plan on our pricing page and the usage rules on our limits page.
How to decide
- Doing paid client work with sensitive data? An official subscription is the safer choice.
- Learning, testing tools or running side projects on a tight budget? Shared access, plus the free tools above, can be a practical start.
- Not sure? Start with one month of the cheapest option and see which limits you actually hit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Semrush or Ahrefs cheaper?
At list price, Ahrefs Lite ($129) costs a little less than Semrush Pro ($139.95). Plan limits differ, though, so compare what you will actually use rather than the headline price.
Are annual plans worth it?
Usually yes, if you already know you will use the tool all year. Annual billing saves around 17 percent on Semrush and about 60 percent on Grammarly. If you are still testing, pay monthly first.
